What is a CR123A Battery?

The CR123A Battery is a cylindrical cell battery that has a lithium chemistry. The shape is similar to a smaller version of a C Cell Battery, or for simpler reference almost like a can. CR123A batteries are widely used for many different applications, from medical devices to military grade technology. Having so many uses makes this battery very popular and thus, sometimes hard to find in stock. They are produced by a variety of large and small brands such as Panasonic, Duracell, Energizer, Tenergy and many smaller companies. This article will tell you everything you may need to know about the CR123A battery.

Technical Specifications Of The CR123A Battery

CR123A Battery Nominal Voltage:

3.2-3.3 Volts

CR123A Battery Capacity (Lithium)

CR123A Battery Chemistry:

Lithium Manganese Dioxide

Are CR123A Batteries Rechargeable?

A very common question asked about the CR123A lithium battery is “Are CR123A Batteries Rechargeable?” The short answer is no. CR123A batteries are primary batteries which are considered disposable (or recyclable) and not rechargeable. It can be very hazardous to attempt to recharge a battery that is not meant to be recharged, especially when it comes to lithium batteries. If improperly recharged, a lithium battery can rapidly combust causing serious damage to the device, charger, or user. NEVER TRY TO RECHARGE PRIMARY BATTERIES!

Now although the CR123A battery is not a rechargeable battery, there are batteries that have the same exact dimensions of a CR123A battery but are made from different chemistries. An example of this would be a 16340 sized battery. The 16340 battery is the exact same size as the CR123A battery but is made of a Lithium-Ion chemistry and is rechargeable (secondary) battery.

How Long Does a CR123A Battery Last?

How long a CR123A battery lasts depends greatly on the manufacturing quality and the application of the battery. Assuming that the battery is fresh and purchased from a reliable source, there is still a large range of service life depending on the usage. For a frequent application that requires large amounts of energy, such as for a soldier's weapon light, a CR123A battery could last less than a month. For a more passive usage, such as in a home security alarm panel, service life can be over a year with the right conditions. Basically, how long your CR123A battery will last depends on what you need it to do.

What Battery Is Equivalent To The CR123A Battery?

Although there are no direct equivalents to the CR123A battery, there are batteries with similar sizes but different chemistries and capabilities. For example, the 16340 battery is the exact same size and shape as the CR123A 3V lithium battery, but is made using a lithium-ion instead of lithium manganese dioxide. This means that the 16340 is rechargeable and will fit in the same locations as a CR123A 3V lithium battery. Even though the 16430 battery will fit, it may not provide the same exact performance or offer the same life span as a CR123A battery.

Is there a difference between CR123 and CR123A Batteries?

The CR123 battery is exactly the same as a CR123A 3V battery. The difference in designations comes from different manufacturer’s designation of their products. The more common name for this type of battery is the CR123A battery as this is the designation provided by Panasonic, who is the largest global producer of the CR123A battery.

Are CR2 Batteries The Same As CR123A?

The CR2 battery is not the same as the CR123A battery. The CR2 battery is slightly shorter than the CR123A battery and will not fit in most applications that require a CR123A battery. The CR2 battery and the CR123A 3V lithium battery do share a few similarities in that they are both cylindrical in sahep, made using lithium manganese dioxide, and both the CR2 battery and the CR123A battery are 3 volt batteries.
